Hi all...

Joined up to pick up tips and advice, skills and idea's and generally pick the brains of you lot.

A little history on my part. Had a chainsaw in one form or another for the last 25 odd years, except the last 9 when I sold them and thought I'd seen the last of them. Importantly, I have never had ANY training, and only ever used them on private land "clearing" fallen tree's and limbs, and removing the odd dangerous limb or tree as needed. None of this was paid work, just an addition to a part of my hobby, which is lake fishing. So when the club needed something done, I just did what was needed.

As I get older I do look back and wonder about the legalities involved (ignored) with my chainsaw time back then, but I also realise that although taught by my father, and then professional arborists showing little things along the way, I have nothing on paper to say I can use a penknife, let alone a chainsaw.

To be honest with you all, I don't even know if there are any legal limitations if doing tree work for no reward?

Anyway, as things stand, I realised I missed the work a lot, and have just got myself another chainsaw, with the aim to get back into it. You'll be pleased to hear that I intend to do it properly this time, and would like to find out the best way to get started.

Any help would be gratefully received...

Thank, Martin

Thanks for the welcome guys... Based now in Twickenham/Isleworth. Spent most of my time up the Colne valley between Rickmansworth and Wraysbury. Not that many lake between those points that haven't felt my chain bite... lol

Love a bit of banter, don't hold back.

Welcome to the forum mate.

I guess these days, ie: todays litigous (sp. ?) society, although after 25 yrs you are probably a competent chainsaw user, if you are going to be cutting on behalf of anyone else, or on someone elses property other than your own, then you are going to need to do your CS30/CS31 (sorry these are the old course references, they've changed but not sure what they are called now) certificates of chainsaw operator competency, and fell and process small trees.

And if you are planning to cut for anyone else, either for financial reward or as a volunteer, then you will probably need Public Liability insurance. If you are cutting on behalf of your angling club, and they have PL & EL insurance then you should be covered under their policy for any "voluntary" work you do on their behalf on their property.

The only other essentials you'll need are proper PPE, as a minimum, chainsaw pants/boots/helmet. Of course in your own backyard you can wear what you want, speedos & flip flops if you desire....! Its a look, but safety first eh...?

Hope this helps.

Thanks gnarly' already dug my flip flops out for impending work in the garden

but prefer Bermuda shorts to Speedo's.

Already been looking into courses, though time constraints and finding local courses are the main issues at present.

Found this course...

Level 2 Award in Ground Based Chainsaw Operations | Capel Manor College

but not sure if that covered all I need??? but by the looks of your reply, it does???
