Im looking into something crazy;

Chopping firewood hardly gives you butter on the bread, so why not try to add value to the material.

Not having a proper mill for cutting logs, I thought of the vikings.

They took their axe and split the log, making what we call mirror-split planks.

If one couldget Ingmars klyv to split the logs in, say lenghts of 3 meters, one could mill these rough planks on the little circular saw.

Got the idea?

Didnt happen. -yet.

I think it could work for 1 meter pieces as you say. Want them longer to fetch better price.

Seems they should be split from the end, if thats the case, then the klyv needs to lie down.

My logs are 60-80 cm diameter spruce with very little knots.

well if you could lay the length at a 45 ish angle and then go for the split - then spin the log 90 degs so you came in on the same line i guess that would start the split but you would then need the equivalent of a froe to carry it through

 

saying that - just watched the vid - thats how we have split most of our firewood prior to my tickets the good old wedge and hammer. on large lenths before storing them in 2 m lenths

we didnt do the debarking or the mass waste to get one plank though.

Ill try your angle split.

Regarding waste, any waste will be firewood, so shouldnt be a problem.

I wonder if this type og planks are sellable at a higher price than normal planks?
