when heat treating the blade, as it becomes cherry red the steel will lose its magnetism just at the critical temp at which you need to quench it. old sump oil is v good imo as it has a high carbon content, some of which is absorbed by the steel as it is quenched.

Been interested in making one for a while now so got on with it today as I had an early finish. Not finished yet as it needs heat treating/tempering and some scales making up but it was 2 hours well spent in my opinion . Made using an old file

I have one I'm making slowly. I bought some 5mm thick ground flat stock, as I didn't want to use old file steel (too many variables).

 

Using a hand file for the primary bevel is slow and hard!

You can say that again, the first knife I tried took for ever and didn't turn out so well but I used the bench grinder on this one to put the initial grind on then just honed it with a file. This is only my second blade so not so fussed about using a file but if I continue to make them I will buy some tool steel I think
