7/16 chain question please

when you do the oil tank clean and checks the oil feed is vacumn fed from the engine so there may be a bit of carbon on the end of the pipe that comes from the engine there isnt a oil pump. also the throttle operates the carb and the vacumn switch on the oil pump that switch sometimes loses pressure and it dont pump oil but the hand oiler works well

thanks andrew its oiling ok now as is untouched its got a small master cylinder fitted under the trottle linkage so when i rev it it pumps oil at same time etc and theres an oil pipe running from crank case to presurise the oil tank thus delivers oil to where the bar mounts but can also use the manual pump to when its being used etc

THIS WEEKS BEST ARBTALK AWARD GOES TO MR ANDREW SHAVEY ESQ

 

for going out of his way for me and helping get me sorted out with a bar n sprocket sorry spud mate you was pipped at the post by shavey lol for the carb diaphram directions it was very close though as if the power head was kaput the bar would of bee usless but then the sprocket came in so greatful everyone for the posts >>>>> now then what chain should i choose now theres so so many lol

now then andrews sorted me out with a 404 sprocket and a brandshiny new 25" bar pt numbers stamped into bar is 11923 then below numbers 2563b0321 i,ve had my feeler guages in the bar and its just a tad over 1.6 mm so how on earth do i match up a chain do i go for 1.5 404 and 80 dl or 1.6 404 84 dl has anyone got any info on this bar please as i,ve done a google search and got nothing back even from the oregon webbsite so how on earth do i go about match up a chain please help

Firstly, you want 1.6mm (0.063") gauge, which is standard for .404" chain. The really old Oregon bars don't have any references available, and the number of drive links will depend on the distance from drive sprocket to bar, as well as bar width, so can't assume number of drive links. This means you have to measure up.

 

The best bet is to put the bar on the saw, with the chain adjuster wound as far in towards the drive sprocket as you can go. You then wedge it there (or stick one of the clutch cover nuts on with some big washers to hold it) and measure round the sprocket and bar with a tape measure (in inches). This gives you the chain length. Divide through by 2, then divide by .404" and this gives you the number of drive links you need on your chain. Round up, not down, and if it is -very- close to a whole number add another 1 or it will be really awkward to get the chain on.

 

Note to anyone else trying this - the above works on saws with an inboard clutch. If you have an outboard clutch you always need to add an extra 1, otherwise you can't get the chain over the bar nose. Guess how I know this...:blushing:

i done excactly the same some years ago now i always add on a link

 

i use the same chain as alec said this bar fits the solo rex super rex solo 70 and solo twin

 

i tried the bar on all my solos and it fitted every one perfect that bar is made of good steel its got a good ring to it :thumbup::thumbup:

aww thanks for the quick replys i,ve learned even more about saws today very greatful sorry to mither now again but should i got for semi or full chisel please and also do you find certain makes of chain suits this type of bar better than others expanding when warm etc ??

OK, firstly make - Oregon or Stihl, doesn't make much difference. Windsor is reckoned not to hold its edge so well.

 

Tooth form - depends on what you are doing. Semi-chisel will hold and edge longer and cope with dirtier wood whereas full chisel will cut faster when fresh but will dull more easily, and doesn't cope so well with dust and grit as the corner tends to chip off.

 

Have you looked at the options on chainsawbars.co.uk (Rob D's site)? Go to the Custom/Bulk Chain tab and click the 'Custom Loops' option - if you then select .404" .063" then it will give you the options to browse through. Click on the individual options and you will get a short description.
