HI,

Using our Timberwolf chipper today and noticed on tick over this strange sound every so often like the bearings knocking!! Lifted the black plastic roller cover to get a better look and noticed the nut on the end of the rotor shaft was slack!! Tightened it up and it ran fine again!! No knocking and running smoothly. What im wanting to know why would the nut be slack was it never tightened correct when bearings were changed around 200hrs ago, and with the nut slack Im imagining its damaged the bearings but its running smoothly now.

If the bearings were replaced that long ago I'd leave it loose ready for the next bearing change (Don't shout at me it was a TW tecchie at their HQ who told me they should be replaced every 200 hours)

Mods - if you think this is too provocative a comment please delete it.

Thanks for suggestions guys, maybe its time to replace the bearings I usually change them around every 400hrs with no problems. As it my machine blade are always sharpe and no **** goes through it, well not much

Wise man indeed.

The half nut fitted to this shaft should have high strength Loctite applied to the threads before being torqued up to 65lb/ft.

If the machine is used as per instructions in the manual, e.g service and blade change regime observed correctly and no stringy or non wood material fed through it, the rotor bearings will last in excess of 500 hours:thumbup1:
