The end for the VW Camper

I had a orange and white one in the early nineties when I used to race mountain bikes. Used to put the bike on a bike rack and travel and camp out at the races. Used to look well cool. But they are so cold in the winter to drive, no heater to speak of at all. Has the heater controls but they did not do anything. Fond memories.

That was the problem with an air cooled engine in the rear, weak heat exchangers and about a 12 ft run to get the luke warm fumes to the dash board

IIRC they made a special heater for cold climates which worked by burning petrol in a separate chamber somewhere in the cab.

I don't recall power steering or any assistance on the brakes either. But it didn't matter as they never went that fast.

Very naughty I know but we used to light the gas rings on from the hob to try and get some heat in the van on a very cold drive home on the A303. My daughter was about 15 months old sat in the front, she is 20 now! VW campers hold different memories for people, I think that what makes them special.

My dad had 1, I remember being terrified because they said there was a bull onthe field if we got out the van, they left us in it to go for a drink!

Then the roof collapsed when we were in the damp stinky bunks!

I hated the thing!

Then he got a square 1 with no window and concerted it himself, with no windows!!!!

I bought this camper in the ninety's. It was a wreck! Spent 3 years restoring it and have now done around 90k miles in it. I've only had to be recovered twice. Once with a seized wheel bearing and once with a gear selector problem. About every 3 years I have to invest a lot of time in it and it makes you wonder if its all worth it but I just love the freedom of going where you please when you want.:thumbup1:

Ironic thread this! Our family have had a few VWs over the years, and I'm considering selling my Hot Rod to get a T4 or T5 for the weekends!

But I don't want to fall into the trap of getting one, then 6 weeks later, finding out that I don't really like the camping thing!

The Hot Rod fits in the garage and is lots of V8 fun and noise, a Van will just take up space on the drive when not used....

I've never had the displeasure of owning one but do have sour childhood memories of holidays around Scotland in one.

Damp, small, noisy, uncomfortable, broken down........

These days I find the Johansen's Hotel Guide and the Mr & Mrs Smith Hotel Guide much better for UK short breaks.

😂😂😘😜

Sent with my iPhone from me, to you!

I've always wanted a vw but the price at home really put me off getting one coupled with the notorious breaking down but one day I'll get one and get around Europe in one!
