I don't think its fair to call the Police bad with some ancient old wives tale you trawled up on the internet, that story is probably older than you are.

And will, IMO, be based on fact at some time.

Indeed. There are variations on the story, I don't think that one can be based on fact because its based on a lie but the variation that has the guy calling back and saying "its OK no need to rush, I just shot them" may well come to be.

A neighbour of mine opened up on raiders with his shotgun on Sunday

What do you mean Skyhuck?

It will IMO have happened, it all well and good to say the police will see through it and not attend, but all 999 call are recored, can you imagine the fallout if the police did not attend ASAP and it was true!!!

No, he fired a warning shot.

Would it speed things up though?

The incident near me on Sunday has the regular police at the end of the road in double quick time but, because a firearm had been discharged (even though is was the householder) they had to hold back for quite some time until the armed response offices arrived leading to quite a delay.

Well one of my neighbours saw another neighbours house being broken into, they rang the police, they could not attend, so asked him to watch and take down descriptions of the intruders.
