Thanks for all the replies - I know that Merino is the best, can't avoid it - mate imports it fom Norway (Nordiclife) and is a little evangelical to say the least ! but can't bring myself to put it through work/snags/bonfires .

Forgot to mention the need for the zip,So thanks Swampster - will be giving them a go.

Cheers

Steve

my icebreaker has done three years of proper abuse. expensive but worth it.

Having worn all the base layers I can think of white water kayaking, hill walking and skiing. Ice breaker are the best. Very tough and don't smell.

Aldi occasionally sell a merino base layer but they're itchy.

For cheap n cheerful regatta isn't bad but you do get the polyprop pong. Go-outdoors usually has cheap stuff. Tk maxx are ok too.

If you can afford it get icebreaker. You will love it.

I'm not sure if alpkit make base layers but they're really good value outdoor kit.

Another vote for merino wool. Any of the strectchy type stink after a couple of hours. Merino will go three or four days without the need to wash. I got my last one in tk maxx for 25 quid, has a half zip too. Proper job! Would tell you what make it is, but I'm wearing it as we speak!
