If yer game it is doable.I rebuilt an 026 a few years ago.Get the ally transfer off the cylinder with acid.New aftermarket piston and rings and it should be a goodun.Address the problem that caused it in the firstplace which might be an airleak.New crankcase seals.

Might have just been neat fuel though.Bit more likely.Pick some other parts up off ebay and you`ll have a good saw.

Sometimes its just fun to have a winter project.

Thankyou for that mate :) i think ill get a pro to check it out and go from there lol but ljke you say would be nice to have a project over the winter and to get a good saw out of it for couple of hundred quid

Hmm if the 440 is the oval shape filter I believe ive got a new filter box cover somewhere kicking around I bought in error.

The 230 I had similarly damage to that was thru clutch drum bearing failure and heated/melted that area.

Looks like the previous owner has ran it with the brake on. You'd be surprised how much the ms440 would fetch on eBay sold as spares/repair. We put scrapped machines on there and some of the prices they go for is unreal!!

Yeah ive bought a few of them :001_tt2:

Good to see your fixing it :thumbup1:

I have an old 044 its a cracking saw! came with a 24" bar when it arrived, put it on 20" as std but one day i needed to lower some stumps to wall height and i put the 24" on it, burried it into the 3ft ash and it was ace :thumbup1:

I bought a seized 044 from ebay - fortunately found the cause was a failed piston ring so after a few evenings making sure I had fished all the bits out of the crank case I put it back together with a cheap chinese pot and piston and it's been running as my bandsaw mill powerhead for the past three years. At one point when the 066 wasn't working I stuck it on the Alaskan on a 36" bar and it did it, albeit slowly. A really solid workhorse of a saw in my opinion, and well worth fixing.

If it was mine, I'd get it clean, including service kit for the carb (from Rowena), buy the missing bits (wait until they come up cheap on ebay) and put it back together, then get it pressure and vacuum checked and the carb set up. In my case I would ask Spud to do this - posting it works fine if you're too far off to do it in person. You then find out whether the cause of failure was an air leak and get the tricky bits dealt with. If it's not an air leak, you can reasonably assume someone used neat fuel in it and carry on and use it.
