I ve had similar problems been told it was carpal tunnel but went to have ct and MRI scans now found blockage in my spinal cord. I am having a operation on it in dec if that does not work then will have to have some of my spine sections replaced. I am 31 I am slightly bricking it.

it could be the start of white finger, i suffer a lot with pins and needles over the past few years and do have white finger in index finger and the next one when i get really cold but it could also be carpel tunnel as well or damaged tendons in the wrist, all three can cause alot of pain and pins and needles in your hands. had to take 2 months of work + about another year to recover fully after having simular problems that didnt go away, took doctors months to work out i had damaged the tendons either side of my wrist from building raised beds in solid oak

Been to the doctor today about a similar thing she said it's probably carpal tunnel syndrome I've had it once before and shook it off but this time it's not going anywhere and she wants to cut the carpal tunnel in both wrists to release the nerves, not good considering I'm only 21!

I have just had the op first day back at work today get it done asap before you end up with muscle wastage if thats what the doc ordered .It meant 6 weeks off for me and my grip is strong but the muscles the ligaments are attatched to have weakened from the op hoping the strength returns to full strength soon but really glad I had it done now as have had no symptoms since just pillar pain.

Hope the op goes ok for you at least they picked up on it early and at the age you are you stand a better chance of recovering from the op good luck

Hi all

As above I have been doing my fare share of hedge cutting and chainsaw use lately like all you others guys, and I have recently started suffering with a lot of Pins and Needles in my right hand (index finger etc) in my fingertips.

Can't really seem to shake it off and was wondering if any of you guys on here have suffered with this problem and found any symptoms to shake it off.

Sounds like white finger would do as others have suggested more frequent breaks invest in some gel gloves maybe even deep tissue massage on the palm may help to increase circulation in the area see a proper massuer :)

after other posts using breakers in old days without any vib supresion. if i use a saw for to long and its cold my left hand swells to double the size pain is dreadful. only thing i find is to put it under a luke warm tap to get blood flowing again but takes a age to wear off. do not get it as much with the newer saws. but do a bit then have a rest. what i do find if knocking in stakes hedgelaying i sart o get cramp in hand and have to stop so that maybe linked to white finger. not nice. but then there was not the HSE there is today. maybe those of us oldies who suffer or our forbears who died from work related illnesses have made it safer for those now working.

Forget about the gel gloves (can make things worse) have a good look at your saw, check the vibration levels quoted by the manufacturer and use the HSE HAVS calculator to work out your maximum trigger time usage (<100 points). Consider a new saw with heated handles they do work. Lastly consider visiting a OH specialist. HAVS (white finger) is not nice. All the best.
