4x4's & Catalytic Converters being nicked

Hey all

I realise I'm diving straight in without an intro - apologies for that.

Been lurking on here for a while and soaking up all the great knowledge, I'll do the proper hello later, but I was wondering if anyone has a mod to stop the above thread title happening?

Most Arb's drive some kind of pick up / 4x4 - I'm using a Ranger.

I was aware of the the vulnerability of the Cat in a raised chassis, but with recent BBC coverage I've had a look underneath properly. I'm no engineer but on first inspection a security "bracket" seems doable?

GREAT FORUM BTW!

Hi Russ, this is quite a problem for a lot of people. I've never inspected my Navara as to be honest I wouldn't even know what it looked like or where to find it...or even if my truck has one....yes i'm that crap :blushing:

I understand the rangers are particularly easy to get them off from though. Good luck with a solution and welcome to the forum

Cheers for a quick response, Steve look for a torpedo type cylinder half way along the exhaust.

Jamin - any first hand knowledge of fittings?

I've got a good dog but the ***** crew can do the job before I've got the smoking jacket on and got past the peacocks on the main lawn - ;-)

Take it off if you are in a hot zone and fit a standard piece of pipe in its place? Only fit it on for the MOT

If it's a diesel you don't automatically need it for the MOT and can't be failed for a missing cat if the vehicle still meets the emissions for it's age so try it without one first.

No experience of the anti theft things you can buy. They tend to be a bracket that clamps round the cat and then a security cable is connected to the chassis. Another type I looked at is an alarm that has a cable you put around the cat and choke off, apparently it detects the sound of the metal being cut and sets the alarm off. Either way if they want the cat, they'll get it ! :/

As others have done I just welded a pipe in the cats place when mine was pinched, no mot problems as diesels have a smoke test not an emmisions test, although someone had mentioned this was going to change my local tester said it still won't be a problem
