How many uses for a fallen 80ft beech tree?

We've had a beech tree up-rooted in the wind and apart from the fact that it is now horizontal instead of vertical the wood looks healthy.

 

I paced it from ground level to the top and reckon 80ft tall....it's about 2.5ft diameter at the base of the trunk. So, not huge, and not small.

 

Seems a shame to burn the whole thing.... any alternative suggestions?

Beech is certainly millable, and is a beautiful wood to work, however it isn't terribly fashionable at the moment. You might find it easier to sell if it's spalted or flamed, though I'm very fond of pure white beech, if I'm honest.

 

If you are selling the log, you wouldn't get any more for it selling it as a sawlog, but at least it won't be burned.

if the wood is healthy then its perfect for me. I'm looking for people to mill me squares for future skittle pin production. I require 5 1/4" squares and any leftover bits can always be used for smaller pins as 3" will do for welsh skittles.

 

know anyone with a band mill?

length doesn't matter as once its dried for a couple of years I'll cut them to length when I turn them.

 

I just want long squares at the mo. could be 8-12'.

just band milled to the size required and get as many out of the tree as can be had
