It's a measure of hardness on the Rockwell scale, higher number=Harder steel.

ya.. thats the one, i found out you can get certain drill bits to drill hardened steels (even tool steel) but.. they are very expensive and also very brittle.

they would have to be mounted in a ridgid setup with power feed, the feed and cutting speeds are crucial to making the cut work.

sounds like a job for a machine shop there eddy..

'ere Chris, you don't happen to have any experience of machining 2 stroke motorbike heads do you? I've got one that eventully I want a bit skimming off the squish area - partly to lower compression but also to lose some damage too. Just need to find a grown up who knows more about how much/angle to take than I do :blushing:

sorry chris, i missed this post somehow.. im sure i can help, post some pics?

my lathe can turn up to 9" diameter.

Cool :thumbup1: It's something I need to get done eventually, but it's still running something like as it is. Think it must have had something like a bit of ring bouncing round in there at some point.

What I'd like to try and do is take some of the damage out and reduce compression slightly at the same time so as to calm the power slightly (250 motocross bike pretending to be an enduro bike) without having to resort to adding an extra base gasket.

I just need to work out how much to take off and what angle for it to still run something like - that's proving the hard bit :blushing:
