minimum Kn for climbing

help me solve an argument we had at work today

 

what is the minimum requirement in Kn for carabiners

 

is it 24Kn or is it ten times the weight of the climber?

 

and can you use a 22Kn as ppe, the edelrid one i bought at the weekend started the arguement off

i believe the minimun breaking strength is 5,000 pounds but an not to sure just remember that figure for some reason sorry cant be much more help

I was pretty sure it was 15Kn??!!

According to Petzl PPE, personal protective equipment ie working at height protection has a minimum of 15Kn across it's major axis, now hopefully someone who subscribes must be loler certified and may clarify. Thats equate to 1500kg across the long axis of the average karabiner, now if you work on a factor of * 10 for margin, that equates to a bloke of 150kg lobbing himself out of the tree and seeing if the karabiner will stretch open. So 22kn I think you'll find suffiecient

Its 22kn though I don't happen to know where that is stated though it is most probably in BS EN 362:2004 Personal protective equipment against falls from a height. Connectors and maybe else ware. I'm sure someone will clarify this soon enough. I would have thought it would be worth putting in the AFAG 401.
