The famous 'U' steel that the men up north use is 'X-rayed' for faults. Isn't It?!

Incorrect tempering is a very likely cause here.

Udderholme Chipper Steel. Used by most. It has a very high purity but nothing can be 100% perfect. Not sure on the xray bit. Have heard this but not sure.

Blades are manufactured in batches so if it was tempering you would have a batch of blades breaking :scared1: Have seen this happen before but the blades were tempered too soft so they just wore excessivley. If too hard they usually shatter not crack.

The above is just my experience. I'm sure there are metalogists out there who may correct me.

Funny how the manufactures / agents on here seem to blame the pattern blade....

My only major blade failiure on was on genunine TW blades , I switched to saturn and have not had a problem since.

If no genuine blades failed then I could accept the point, but they do.

I once had an anvil made and had it heat treated, it lasted about an hour then shattered leaving the bolts and a ring of anvil steel under each one.

The anvil should not have been hardened at all, we tested the old one (file test) and it was not hardened at all. Blades need to be hardened but they can be too hard

i have a set of up north blades or down south to me, i thought they were cheaper in price because they werent a huge company kicking the backside out of prices. no complaints here. touch wood i have never had any problems with blades, like most self employed guys i make sure clean stuff goes through, but when you are chipping 10inch you cant guarantee there arent nails in some bits. oh and i chipped a full climbing bag one day but luckily the gaffs didnt go through.
