Mewps have their place, the conifer job I posted the other week is a good example where it saved a huge amount of time and effort.

98% of the time I climb and I have a top of the range tracked narrow access mewp sat there gathering dust. Just because you have access to a mewp doesn't mean to say it is used ALL the time. It can be a pain checking it getting it out, onto the job and putting it away and getting the chipper to the job at the same time. If the mewp hasn't been used for a while, it can take a full day to do all the checks and service, get it on the trailer and put it away again at the end

But what is annoying is dismissing a mewp out of hand completely, they have their place.

For example, access road through my wood is 300 metres long lined with about 100 trees, I could deadwood the whole lot in less than half a day, how long and how much effort would it take to do them climbing

I brought this discusion up at work this morning and all I got from my boss was a scarcastic laugh. It may become a case in the future that we have to use MEWPs but are you going to put the extra £250 (thats a ball park figure) to hire the mewp on to the customers bill?

There is always going to be someone who will climb the tree, which will be a lot cheaper.

MEWPs or climbing, not really bothered. Don't have any problems with both.

we did around 20 very tall limes the other week with a 38m mewp, it took three days. the street was narrow and the traffic management ment a small space to land stuff in. it would have took ages longer climbing and caused far more disturbanc to locals not to mention the dificulty involved in some of the branches if you had been climbing

they are a great thing but.... climbing's fun

I don't understand this :confused1:

The MEWP MUST have REDUCED the size of the drop zone, I really don't get how it would speed things up?

You can spike to the top of a Lime in a couple of minuets.
