Why, oh why oh why?....

No wonder customers are confused, most firewood companies dont seem to have a clue what they are selling, ton of logs, builders bag, ton bag. from what o can find there are 3 different sizes of builders bags. The stove shops dont have a clue either.

Called 3 local stove shops last week to offer them my wood, all 3 were clueless when it came to volumes of what they were getting delivered.

One of them has a ton of logs delivered for £70, explained was it actualy a ton of logs, after about 10 minutes figures out it was a builders bag, went on to explain the differences between builders bags and cubic metre bags. Went on for a further 10 minutes and it ended with him still adiment he was getting a better deal buying it for £70 for a 750x750x750 builders bag than what i could have done sorting him out a deal for £80 a cubic metre....

If everyone stuck to cubic metres it would be easy!

This chap is talking a lot of sense :)

I think half the time domestic log customers are alot more savvy than they let on. If they cause hassle you will just give in and throw a load of extra logs in to keep them happy. We seem to live in a time if you complain you get something free and for some its an automatic reaction especially if they have the power of feedback or a review.

If log suppliers all charged & delivered in a common unit i.e. cubic metres then there'd be a lot less confusion about "bags" and "loads" I think that's a big assumption to make about customers.

But thats how most people sell logs. Thats how you bought your 0.7 of a cubic metre.

I beg to differ but no it isnt in my experience. It was advertised by the bag and he only came up with a volume when i asked. The majority of ads i see are advertised by the bag. Confusing.

The confusion here is not the actual unit of measure but the difference between loose and stacked volumes. If you bought a loose cubic metre, ie a bag 1mx1mx1m, then you would still be left with less a cubic metre once you stacked it. I'm not criticising you as I can understand where the problem arises but I don't think you could say that the seller has given you a short measure as the question you asked concerned the size of the bag and nothing else. The inclusion of Pine in what is supposed to be a bag of hardwood is wrong though. :001_smile:

But you cant quote a customer for a stacked cubic metre because if you stack it twice you will get a different result. Just to add something else into the mix we use 1.5 cubic metre bags if we use them a couple of times they stretch a bit and we always bounce them as we load them to settle the load. Tipped some this week into my tipper which is exactly 2 cu metres and each bag filled it to the brim. So if you think you are pulling a fast one doing bulk bags you may actually be doing the customer a favour. We always sell by the cubic metre and heap the load incase it settles on route so often a tipped load will be 2.2 cu metres rather than 2.
