Why, oh why oh why?....

After agonising about buying wood instead of those compressed briquettes I looked round for a local firewood supplier. He said £50 for a dumpy bag of hardwood which he estimated to be 0.7 cubic metres. I've stacked his delivery in the woodshed. A few bits of Scots pine and the dreaded poplar in there. Stacked it loose and measured..... It's only 0.45 cubic metres worth. Disappointing.

Funny how suppliers never say "well it's a 0.7 cubic metre bag but it won't contain 0.7 cubic metres of logs." Maybe that would affect sales. But what would I know ;)

I always quote 0.7 cubic metres loose loaded. If they want to know its 0.45 stacked its not a problem its still the same price unless I detect a customer from hell then it doubles.

Because I was paying for 0.7 cubic metres of wood NOT a 0.7 cubic metre bag.

That's not how I read it. If you were expecting 0.7 cubic metres of solid wood then it would have filled 2 or 3 dumpy bags.

Though if you're finding pine in among the hardwood then that's a bit off if it was sold as all hardwood but £50 for a dumpy bag is cheap however you look at it.

We set up this page some time ago to help 'clarify' the situation re buying firewood and help set exectations.

Information for firewood buyers: Buying Firewood: A guide to buying firewood, logs, kindling and how to use a moisture meter

Information for firewood sellers: Firewood Selling Guide - Best practice and standards for firewood suppliers and retailers

"Builders bag / Ton bag / Dumpy bag of logs

A builders bag is a convenient method of delivering firewood as it is relatively easy to handle for both the seller and buyer. A builders bag also provides an easy way to visualise the quantity of wood that is for sale. Please remember that a builders bag is not a ton of wood and it is not a cubic meter of wood (probably around 0.6 m3) and don't let anyone tell you any different!

Again, it is likely that the logs inside the bag have been loosely loaded so expect the volume of your purchase to reduce if you make a nice stack of your firewood. Be aware that only dry, seasoned wood should be stored in a buiders bag; as there is little opportunity for air circulation any damp or wet wood will quickly develop mold if left in the bag."
