262xp help please

home firewood processor here. Ive had a 262xp for nearly 20 years and generally treated it like a dog, using old veg oil as chain lube and never cleaning it. Recently the oil stopped coming through to oil the chain, ive cleaned the hole out and soaked the tank with petrol but no joy.

Any other suggestions? If it needs a new oil pump is it a hell of a job, and does anyone have a recommendation of where i might get the parts?

 

I looked at a cheap new husky, but i'd rather restore this as its been a great saw. Ive also got a 266xp, would I be able to cannibalise this for parts? I got it cheap and i don't think its totally original.

Oil pump replacement is fairly easy, you've got to remove the clutch first though, OEM parts are still available from a good dealer.

It may only be a blocked pick up in the oil tank or even a rat's turd like piece of gunk in one of the plastic lines. I've only had a pump give trouble when a piece of balertwine got jammed in the clutch and stripped the nylon worm gear. Clutch can be difficult to get off if it hasn't been off for a while. I favour a piece of starter cord in the spark plug hole AFTER the piston has covered the ports and then a light tap with a modified socket clockwise.

True, I think the 262 has a hex nut on the centre, so a combi wrench should undo it as normal (like stihl clutches)

The nut head isn't deep enough to get a good grip so I used an angle grinder to cut out 3 apertures to get a better purchase on the clutch of 254 and 262 (both of which I still use)

If you been using cooking oil it crystalizes and chokes up the pipes and pump. If all else fails stick some fuel in the oil tank and run the saw a short while (not cutting wood obviously) as ive cleared a few out that way after they've had cooking oil used in them infrequently.

Just get a socket and grind the usually rounded or concave end to a complete flat so it locates on the shallow hexagonal centre of the clutch better

Thanks for the input on this, easy next step seems to be the petrol in the oil tank ruse, nice idea.

After that ill get the clutch off and have a nose around:001_smile:

Problem points are generally gloop and/or chip in the tank stopping the oil pickup drawing oil through to the oil pump, a plugged oil pump or just wear in the pump itself.

 

Other than that, worn or damaged worm drive pinion can also cause issues!
