Climbing test

Might have to do a 'climbing test' for a job with a local authority - never had to do something official like this before; always just prooved myself 'on the job' as it were.

Any ideas what tricks i can be expected to perform?! Also, I generally use a main climbing line and a 5m lanyand to position with/as my 2nd line/when using a chainsaw.

Is this acceptable for companies who want everything done completely by the book?

I would have a second line available so that you can "consider" twin anchor points.

Ask for there risk assessment forms before climbign and go through everything, and make sure they are providing you with a rescuer with suitable equipement.

Seems a bit pissy of them to want a climbing test...I would have thought your npts certs and description of experience should be enuff,,,,? Maybe they had a couple of ropey candidates/experiences themselves...All good advice as above...Two points of attachment when using the saw and yes...a lanyard is fine for this.

I always insist on a climbing interview. I want to judge all the candidates fairly and taking different people opinions can t do that. NPTC are just a guide one of the best climbers I ever employed did nt have any when he started for me, I ve also had guys with more cert s than I knew what to do with that were total crap.

Go in and be yourself work as you usually would if your a reasonable climber you should be ok. GOOD LUCK

I've done 'climbing interviews' for people who don't know me, its no drama, just climb as you would on the job!. Many years ago, some bloke got me to do a nightmare reduction on a Horse Chestnut with live 450v wires running thru it and a pelican crossing under it.

I was green then and foolishy did the job. When I called him back he said he 'didn't need a climber now'. Needless to say, at the time I had the urge to put him thru his own woodchipper with his hair on fire, but now I look back on it as a hard learnt lesson!

I'm L/A and have requested climbing tests/assessments for the last two sets of interviews. Most L/A's use a scoring system when interviewing candidates and the climbing test is now an essential part of the interview procedure.

Don’t worry about it, in theory it would be possible for someone to ‘blag’ their way through an interview and ID tests and get the job (and not be able to climb). The assessment is there to make sure you 'walk the walk' as well as 'talk the talk' :001_smile:

Sorry John didn't mean any insult with the no competition comment, I have fairly low opinion of the LA climbers I've come across. It was sweeping and general. Soz.

I have a thick skin Jason, dont worry about it. Maybe L/A's, as well as the private sector have their good-eggs, as well as bad. :001_smile:
