  1. Can anyone please refresh me as to what is the common cause of a longitudinal crack like this one? It's one of those "I know this but can't quite remember" moments. Seen em in beech and sycamores mostly. Might be something to do with shearing/frost cracking etc Will be checking replies in the morning to see who's the winner!! Thanks Nick Natterer's roost Dunston[1].pdf
  2. When will people learn - STAY AWAY FROM EBAY! (but its such a bargain.....!)
  3. cheers guys - will probably take them to a saw mill now - at least until i can get a beasty saw and an alaskan jig. Beccles is really close to me. Can you PM me the details LSD (nice climb of that red oak by the way - will have to reveal the secret location as i'm in suffolk at the mo.!?)
  4. Steal Samwise's job! He's talking about disappearing off to oz to climb mahoosive eukie's! Hope the hunt goes well mate...
  5. I've got two 8' (ish) by 22" diameter pieces of straight dry oak stem sat on the drive needing to be planked for use as benches/tables and stuff in a local nature reserve managed by my partner. Can anyone help or point me in the direction of someone who won't charges unrealistic prices. cheers
  6. hi dude - did you make it to the climbing comp??

  7. Carried out an Arboricultural impact report recently for a small development. They recently got the go ahead and have invited me back to oversee that appropriate tree protection measures are put in place and adhered to during the construction phase. 3 visits in total. New territory for me - any suggestions on a price per visit would be most welcome.
  8. Like the bespoke bridge tony - I've had the standard one on mine for a long while and it still feels that a hefty swipe with a silky might put an end to it all - what diameter rope sheath have you used and any tips on tying off the ends?
  9. Cheers mate - theres a chance the dreads are coming off soon anyway (a change that i am slightly afraid of) so i might just hold you to your offer!
  10. yup - was it the big mincer in a tree pose in my picture that gave it away!

  11. I'm looking for work in Norfolk/Suffolk. I have my own transport so distance not too much of an issue. I've got my own saws, climbing gear and insurance as well as relevant tickets and RFS cert arb. I would really like a full or part time position but will happily do one-offs, short term work etc. Would also be interested in felling, clearance, surveys, etc Any help is always appreciated Cheers...
  12. You're looking at Aseroe rubra and it is from the stinkhorn family (phallaceae) but not one to darken the shores of blighty. It's smell is described as a subtle blend of poo and dead flesh and the stench attracts flies which disperse the spores. Lovely!! You should find them fairly often especially if your playing in the woodchip! Enjoy!
  13. OUCH! Impressed that you can photograph your injury whilst driving yourself to A&E! Must be tricky typing with the bandages on!
  14. Looks really good. Got to get me a planking jig! Just better keep my better half away from your pictures or i think she'll want one! Give it a rub down with some natural beeswax or a bit of danish oil. try a bit on the bottom corner to see which finish you (or your mum) prefers.
  15. Might have to do a 'climbing test' for a job with a local authority - never had to do something official like this before; always just prooved myself 'on the job' as it were. Any ideas what tricks i can be expected to perform?! Also, I generally use a main climbing line and a 5m lanyand to position with/as my 2nd line/when using a chainsaw. Is this acceptable for companies who want everything done completely by the book?
  16. Just remember: The customer is always right - unless they're a tit!
  17. fire + trees = inevitable disaster. I had to climb a big old oak and put the damn flames out after a scrub clearance fire got a bit big!
  18. As if climbing wasn't dangerous enough, I was in an oak yesterday which had unfortunately caught on fire due to some over-enthusiastic utility boys burning brash. Tree was in a SSSi and was a suspected bat dwelling so would have been a shame to loose it in such a way. 12 bottles of water later and the tree was out - miraculously my ropes were still intact too!
  19. offer appreciated woody - already committed to some stuff in those weeks.
  20. I'm out towards the coast - yarmouth/lowestoft ish! Keeping busy with dribs and drabs but could do with something a little bit more consistent!
