Hi Guys

I have a Stihl mill (unused) and a Danarm 171 (1970s) that is also unused, army reserve stock, (still in wooden box) and wondered if I could marry the two?

The Danarm is over 70cc and 3/8ths chain.

I normally use stihls but wondered if anyone could advise on the use of a Danarm.

It's a bit small for ideal. The Stihl mill will take about 36"? You really want more than 100cc for comfort, although the 066 (92cc) will do it. I've been thinking of trying the Danarm DDA110 (110cc) when it's back together, and if you get hold of a 125cc Danarm that should work pretty well. The 1-71 would be better suited to a 24" Alaskan mill I would think - it's about the same size as an 044.

Alec, do you think a 044 would run a 24" Alaskan well on a full width cut?

James

Hi James, mine did OK when the 066 and 076 both packed up once, and that was on a 36" bar. It wasn't very quick at all, but it got there and there was no damage to anything. I wouldn't want to go much over 18" most of the time and even that wasn't quick, but I was only making 12' long x 8" wide cants for re-sawing with the band mill so it wasn't too bad and the job got done.
