Ive been shooting about 12 years tried everything a time or two but now just shoot a couple of things. A few pigeons at harvest time a duck or two through the winter evenings but the mainstay of my shooting is woodcock. I dont have to travel far often just walking from the house. Numbers are not huge but the ground is fairly open which gives a good chance of a shot. Ill add a few pics from last season.

Have shot a few woodcock in the past , probably count them on one hand . Would not do it nowadays . Fantastic little bird . Roding displays just before sunset are fantastic to watch albeit briefly......

Always seems a shame to shoot them having migrated here to escape the ravages of Northern winters. Never shot one when I used to shoot. Prefer to work my dog now.

We get good numbers of woodcock here compared to some, though the areas I mostly shoot round home I would generally only see about 30 a day. If I drive up onto the mountain some 10 miles away it would not be uncommon to flush 100+ on a good day.

I've never shot a .270. how does it compare to .243?

Bit late replying - been away...

.270 is great to shoot. Flat, fast and with a good punch. Almost always use 130 grain soft point rounds. I have used 110 ballistic tips with good results. Can't fault Tikka rifles. Fantastic value with great accuracy. Same with the old Brno, almost never miss bunnies at 100m with standard remmington high velocity ammunition. Never bothered with a moderator on it, never felt the need. My record so far is 11 rabbits with 11 shots out to about 70m in a freshly baled hay field. The dog got sick of eating rabbit!

Still a lot of love for this thread, been devoting rooks today on a chicken for had high 40's, was a fruitful day with a happy farmer, the .17hmr took care of the few weary rooks that wouldnt flight in pitched in the tees about 100 yards behind the hide,

3. Shots with the rifle 3rooks

All in all a cracking day,

Next on the agenda is pigeons when combining starts 👍
