Interesting Biomechanics

Not entirely sure Jules, but the helical fluting suggests something interesting is going on inside that section of trunk. Would be fascinating to put a Resistograph (or tomograph) through it at various locations.

Did you sound it?

It sounded fine, and I could see nothing about it to suggest it was an unacceptable risk. There was no apparent opening in the stem. Unfortunately for the advancement of arboricultural understanding, this tree will be left for about 5 years before anyone pays it any more attention than to have their dog 'visit' it.

Hi david,

Old post new(ish) topic.

What was the union like on this beauty?

Here's a Beech with pretty amazing branch grafts.

It looks as if two smaller lateralls are embracing the larger mast branch.

Is this a case of self support or just bizarre space sharing.

The Arch is what's left of the gateway (built in 1766) into the residence of William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham & Brittish Prime minister;

As you can see, the Tree is forcing out the brick work to the right.

The structure is going to be subject of a moving or repair project.

Our spec was just an aerial inspection and removing the significant deadwood directly above the Arch and enclosure.

So, which came first.....................the Tree or the Arch?

.

The union is fairly included but I think Dr Slater would be pleased to read that 7 years on from starting this thread the natural braces are still doing a good job at holding it all together.

These pics aren't strictly biomechanics, but I thought since they have a sepulchral theme I'd put them next to the previous memorial picture.

Nice shots Jules,

something fascinating about trees around memorials in general and where they inch slowly toward what seems to be an immovable object like a headstone only to push them nonchantly aside.

Love this oak I went to see the other day, a complete brown rotted tube from crown break down to the floor.

The aerial roots feeding the canopy were sucking the life out of the dead core.
