I am writing to inform you of a problem that I believe you would appreciate being made aware of. My name is Tony Croft and as an employee of J&D Clarks I spoke to John Clark about informing you of this issue and he is happy for me to pass on this information via the company. I am a certified VTA practitioner and a copy of my certificate will be found with this letter. The tree in question is your Eucalyptus, and as in the image below which describes the problem perfectly, I think you’ll see why I thought you may wish to know. I have noted the retaining wall to the rear of your garden has been repaired due to cracks previously, and new cracks have re formed. This is going to become an increasing issue and will not be resolved until this tree is either severely lightened off or removed altogether. In the worst case a Gail could force the root to punch through the wall causing its collapse and wind throw of the tree as the walls support which the tree has come to rely on fails. Basically the tree is incapable of producing a “tension root” on the windward and opposite side to its lean. Accordingly to maintain a state of uniform stress over its entire surface it is utilising the wall as replacement for this tension root. This causes compressive forces on the wall as apposed to tension forces on a normal root that would occur in an open ground scenario.

The work specification allowed by the Local Authority was in my view totally inadequate and certain that they have no knowledge of basic VTA or bio mechanical loads. This is just information and you are entitled to do with it as you wish, and may quote me to the L.A if you wish. The image below is an extract from The updated VTA handbook by Claus Mattheck and I have as a practitioner his consent to use such extracts for these purposes.

If you would like any further assistance on this matter or a full and official report regarding this issue please discuss it with John or Derek at Clarks and we will take it from there. I hope this has proved informative.

Sincerely Tony croft
