Afternoon,

Just ordered a saw (Makita DCS5000 50cc series with 15” bar)

And before I think about firing it up….what else should I get?

Helmet with visor and ear defenders?

Trousers?

Boots?

Gloves?

Chain File & Plug key?

Anything else that is 100% necessary?

Have been offered a safety briefing from a kind member on here.

I’ll not being doing chainsaw work as a living, but will be cutting logs in to rounds for firewood a couple of times a year.

Is there somewhere offering a “beginners kit”?

Best place to look for cheap, but decent, starter kit?

Any second hand places to look?

Thanks!

Danny

All of the above is great for logging, you should get a plug spanner with the saw though, and don't forget a combi/fuel can, If I were you I'd call a few Arb places up give em a list what you need, be firm and tell them you will go with the best quote, I'm sure some will offer discount and bend over backwards to make a sale :) use caution buying secondhand there's good stuff on ebay but also there are some well not so good sellers.

Just one more thing don't buy a cheap helmet with cheap ear defenders,

Good Luck Stay safe

Personally I wouldn't worry too much about chainsaw gloves, normal work ones are fine. Boots trousers and a decent helmet is a must though. If you can make it to one of the shows this year, that might be a good place to get a deal on some of the kit...

i would say so not scrimp on the trousers and helmet and boots as you will spend a lot of time in them. gloves just get some decent work ones the chain file stihl and oregon offer kit rolls of a flat file a round file and a depth gauge it could be a good start as youll have a nic way of keeping it all.

and i 2nd the comment about cheap defenders and helmet get the best money can buy. ive killed one helmet in my time working in arb. it died but i had no injuries from it whatsoever.

good luck stay safe

Bought some Treemme boots at the weekend and a Stihl helmet at the weekend.

Also some chain oil and 2 stroke oil.

Just trousers to go :-)

any recommendations for not ridiculously expensive trousers?

thanks

I do a bit of logging for my wood burner and a fair bit of saw servicing.

For the logging -

A saw:thumbup:

Files, flat and round plus a file guide and gauge

Scwrench (screw driver/wrench)

Fuel mixing container

Funnel

Two stroke oil

Chain oil

Axe for splitting

Saw horse - nice to get logs at the right height and held safely

Helmet with ear and eye protection

Steel toecaps - easy for an axe to glance off a log and take a toe off:blushing:

Trousers - Gotta say I tend to wear them only when out in the field rather than cutting up logs on a saw horse in my own drive but thats my choice!

I do wear gloves but more for protection from rough work rather than from the saw!
