had a good load of chip delivered and it started to get very hot can wood chip combust as getting very hot so have spread it out to let the air get to it.

Yup, Big disposal place close by has caught fire 3 times in the past 4 years. Last month around 300 tonnes of it caught fire and burnt for several days .

thanks for that next time will get troops out and spread it fast so its not inn a heap. that be fun if it did go up already have 10inches of chip that's been put on over the couple of years but under a yew and holly scare y:blushing:

That's the official story. I have been working next door and they have had 3 fires this year. But the piles are a good 8 meters high so the risk of spontaneous combustion is higher than a smaller pile.

I don't think an at waste pile would combust unless you have a really serious heap. The heavier the heap the more it compresses the wood chips which is essentially more insulation so the heat in the centre can't escape speeding up the chemical reactions!then boom

Best bet is to run some polypipe through it in a coil and heat your water and radiators! It's being done in France.... Freebie!

Never had a problem with it and have created over 10,000 m3 of mulch over the years.

 

stick a temp gauge in it, if its under 80c its not going to give you any trouble, and I wouldn't think it would start burning until it passes 100c

Think its a bit like hay/straw. It's most likely to combust around the 18% moisture level.

Woodworks, I know what you mean, I worked out there up until Xmas just gone when I changes jobs.
