a colleague showed me these shots he took whilst in Bejing recently.

 

Propping appears to be a popular way to manage the heritage & safety of these trees from the Imperial Gardens.

 

I think the carving is not just a fantastic nod to the artisans skill, but also a sublime use of what was probably once a magnificant tree.

I would guess the propping of the smaller Pines to be aimed at ensuring they don't develop any natural lean / sweep rather than to prevent failure?

don't think anything will protect them against Beijings pollution though

Trees destabilized by removal of lower branches to culture turf grass. They picked up a bad lesson from western habits; we should learn good lessons from their propping, common in Singapore etc. too.

of course propping being the last resort when structural modifications are not an option?

Just stumbled upon this out and about today.

 

What an interesting site for a Tree.

 

Will try & get a better look at this Cedars planting position at another point in time.

Looks to be slap bang in the middle of a relic church
