The APTA is a much cheaper option, and possible to build yourself. I think Nick (bonner) said he will give the plans away for free. Also, it uses compressed air from a bicycle pump.

APTA2.0 - The 64 Special

Not possible for most people to build by themsleves, unless most people you know can weld, of which most people I know cannot.

Not too mention the bloody thing is unwieldy looking. And kinda dangerous to boot, I would always be worrying about it developing 'leaks'.

For simplicity, Ill take the .22 blank gun thanks, weighs nothing, takes nothing to fire, no compressor etc... a single .22 blank gets you appx. 150'.

Jim Goodal is a joke though, 700.00$ American, I just started to laugh when I saw that price.

Ive seen those same kits advertised as dog trainers for 100-200$. Goodal is rebranding it and adding on 500$ almost.

He knows how many arbos are suckers for shiny ****, whether they need it or not.

Wrong.

You're getting psi mixed up with ft/lbs, which are different things entirely.

You can buy dummy launchers (for dog training) powered by .22 blanks without an FAC and this doesn't seem much different.

Probably overkill for most trees over here!

thank you for that you are correct ft/lbs not psi. sorry for any confusion

It is remarkable how little it takes to launch a heavy projectile (or a lighter one with added rope drag)

At low velocity, over a short distance.

Back in "the day" on a RE YO's course at Chatham ( I think) we were shown a sophisticated decommissioned IRA Mk 5 / Mk 8 mortar.

I seem to remember it was launched with little more than a boosted shotgun cartridge.

so a .22 blank should be more than good.

and muffled/quiet.

gibber

mutter

& twitch
