Hi there..

Have had a search around the forum looking for some sort of resource with information on when to cut certain trees and why..

Need to learn this but don't know quite how to go about it!!

Any help would be muchly appreciated..

Cheers!

There are a few considerations that are species dependant ie silver birch because of it bleeding (im sure some others on here will elaborate on more species). The other consideration is the trees phenology, Shigo states the the two times when the tree is most vulnerable is when the leaves have just formed (period 2) and at the end of period 4, before dormancy.

Rules I work by are avoid pruning during leaf expansion and during leaf abscission. The amount of pruning considered with the health of the tree is just as important as is accuracy of pruning cuts. Never been too worried about sap flow from pruning wounds and this is based on Alex Shigos books.Ref Modern Arboriculture, Shigo. Cheers.

Cut only when actively growing and best time for tree to repair so consider time ing for pathogens and inclement weather
