Here is the first reading I have from the Picus on the Beech tree you were interested in, not good quality, I am waiting for the email for the rest of the report.

 

This reading was taken at the fungal bracket height, around 10 to 15ft up, the consultant identified the fungus as Fomis fementeris, sp?

Do you recall the diameter from the test point?

 

We all make mistakes with spelling sometimes, but the "Consultant" needs to tweek his latin a tad

 

"Fomis fementeris "= Fomes fomentarius - Hoof Fungus/Tinder Bracket.

 

 

 

 

Did anyone sound this trunk with a nylon hammer?

 

The blue & white looks to show an extensive cavity

it has a huge Ganoderma bracket on the stem about 10 ft up and the tree is within easy striking distance of the house. They are having it 'picused' on Weds so we'll see what that finds...[/b] Quote ]

Was the Tomograph deployed just at the bracket height or anywhere else ?

To be fair on the consultant it's not his spelling but the contractor who got him in to do the survey, still waiting on the information you require, hammer, survey location on the tree etc.

 

 

 

Oh and the tree is coming down and I will be doing the climbing.

Hi Dave,

 

Looks like I mis-diagnosed the FB - I could only see the underside at the time when the tree was in leaf and thought it looked like a Gano.

 

The consultant is an excellent bloke and I am sure spelt Fomes fomentarius right.

 

From what I gather (was not on site when it was done) the tomograph was used at bracket height as shown above and also at ground level where it showed hardly any decay apparently.

 

Jeez, first I can't ID a portugese laurel and now this! Gonna go and hide in a corner....

That's the first time I have seen the top of the fruiting body. Doesn't look so much like Fomes to me - but I don't know jack...

Don't forget to take a shot of the cross section from the tomograph.

 

From this top angle it does look like, as Paul suggests, either G. adspersum or applanatum.

 

Looks too flat for Fomes.
