Can anyone identify the cause of these deformities?

Not sure what an Asterid is, time to go look I guess. For what it's worth I've seen it mostly on holly, but also sycamore (I think) and also on a dandelion last year (on the flower stem and actual flower) and this year on a tomato plant, extending from stems to fruits.

Asterids is a taxonomic level below phylum but above order, but not as clear-cut as a class.

 

But if Sycamore fasciculates, and it's not an Asterid, then my theory lasted about 20 minutes before you killed it [boo hoo]. I want to see photographic evidence though...

 

Dandelions are asterids!
