I use a large framing tool (500 x 300), rotating the log until it's upright on the 1st cut. I then arrange the 1st cut rails so they're horizontal using said framing tool. Check once more once the rails are attached. Needless to say, your log needs good chocks to stop it rolling about once in position. 1st cut and bottom cut first will make the log lighter to rotate and save you time, as stated.

Mini mills run on a rail that is affixed to a long length of straight timber - most people use 6 x 2" I hear. You screw your long, straight board onto the first cut and run a saw vertically down the log. Hence, straight 90 deg. I'm looking for a 70cc+ saw to do this with as 'the fridge' (Stihl 088) is a little over-engineered I think...

I've always done this with a spirit level. Mill top and bottom, then rotate the log and wedge it so the sides are vertical. That way I only have to set the slabbing rail horizontal, rather than trying to measure anything on the log end (which is often not square).

The mini-mill is a fantastic little tool, can't believe how well it performs, and the rails are a doddle to set up.

Fixed to 6x2 here, as said.

Mini mill is ideally suited for making beams. You get 90 degree angles automatically.
