I have been contracting with the Alstor 8x8 for he past three years , yes it seems expensive but when you are doing professional forestry and need the tonnage out its the right equipment for the job. I paid off my machine in 18 months and had no problems with it . As for its easy to roll it is not , it complies with all current standards and is the only mini forwarder they have assessed for fmoc. I say don't buy one if you haven't the work hire one with operator and see what it can do . There has been sites where for cost they have used quads or mini diggers for extraction and soon realize it costs more , does more damage and i get the call to clear up ...

I have seen the Alstor in operation and there realy is no equal comparison, most certainly a quad, mini digger or compact will not move the same amount of tonnage per day and is unlikely to stand the pace over a prolonged period of time.

The Alstor is built for a purpose and if you have the need then they are the tool for the job. Basically I agree with areleywood

Interesting Josh that the Kranmans haven't a good reputation. I think it was a thread a while back where you mentioning them alerted me to their existence.

Areleywood - glad to hear that you are doing well with yours. I don't dispute that they are quick and efficient in the right hands but there are a lot of problems with them:

* They do roll easily on a side slope - watched a very experienced operator go over on very little side slope combined with a stump.

* They have aspects of their design that are really poor - the brakes are awful, the gearbox is awful, there is insufficient space for a larger person to operate it comfortably or carry any tools. The underside/driveshaft is exposed. The cab option is cripplingly expensive and required if you are going to use them on FCS land.

* When you actually look at the components, they aren't worth close to £40,000.

Can I suggest that anyone who is skilled in this kind of agricultural welding/fabricating that there is a gap in the market for a UK built mini forwarder?

I would look for a reasonable second hand alpine(reverse drive) with a trailer. You've then got the options to add other implements for other work. Mowing/flail work. Fencing etc. If its too steep then hire one in with an operator. I think you'll find on production work over conservation, where timber is used to offset the cost of an operation rather than pay for it with profit..... The Alstor will struggle!
