Clearing brambles with chainsaw

I've been clearing out an old pheasant pen the last few days. Mix of dead and fallen dutch elm disease trees, new growth of elm suckers and loads of elder plus tons of brambles up to 10 foot high. I've tried the brush cutter and a hook but I've found the best thing for brambles is waving the saw at it.

Is this dangerous? It seems fine and very effective, reducing the brambles to little bits and going through any suckers or small trees as well. Obviously all PPE'd up. It's just much quicker than the brush cutter I have found.

+1 for the hedge cutter and brushcutter. Long reach hedge cutters are sometimes even better as you don't have to get so, err, involved with the bramble or have to bend over so much to cut it low.

Stick the long reach on the brushcutter harness and bob's your uncle ;)

I've always got on best with a slasher when clearing brambles. Viscous evil devil of a plant when its been free to roll around and grow that wild...

I'd favour a long-handled slasher too, (or a brush cutter if you have one). As has already been said, waving a chainsaw about is not its intended method of operation. Nor is clearing of brambles its intended use. Carry on waving a chainsaw about and an accident will happen sooner rather than later.

If your going to go and wave a chainsaw at brambles would be best if it was a pole saw at least then the sharp bits are well away from you

But I guess the proper safe way would be a brush cutter although you are correct in how quick and effective a chainsaw is for the job just not the safe way
