holly reduction

hi all, quick question a gamekeeper local to me is looking to reduce the height of some holly in one of the woods on the shoot, the trees are currently about 30 feet high and thick as yer thigh, how low would you reckon to be able to take them down to,and to let them re-sprout new growth,and to let the under storey grow back,similar to pollarding them. cheers keith

What your really asking is how low can you "top" them...

 

Reduce them to a height you wish but expect them to look rubbish for a long while

I took a holly in the garden at home down to knee level but didn't get around to roping and yanking the roots and stump out and it has grown back with a vengeance

Take it to whatever height they want it will come back and just look odd for a while

Holly always grows well after a pruning / topping , so lay into it !

Be aware of nesting birds utilising the dense crowns or cavities in the stem.
