Hoping Steve is going to say wow its definitely Muhuhu just because it will sound great when I tell people....

Beech/Iroko would still be a result though!

Anyone a floor laying expert by the way as I think this could be a bit of a baptism of fire...

the grain structure is similar to iroko, but the colour from the underside is too light, how old was the school, and was it a gym hall/assembly hall

Thinking on the same lines there, assuming it was the assembly/exam hall as the gym was next door and was a different wood for sure.

Would have had a go at the gym floor as well but ran out of time, wasn't the easiest job getting it up without wrecking it!

For my learning slack what characteristics would rule beech out? Very interested in the specifics. Does it just not look right or is it something in particular about beech grain?

Cheers :-)

Beech is normally more pale/yellow in colour and is very close grained.

iroko is very pale when freshly cut but darkens with exposure to light but over the years can then can get bleached back to a pale colour due to strong exposure to sunlight. I would not bet my life on it being iroko but the colour on the bottom of the boards is consistent with iroko that has not been exposed to much light. If you sand a piece the iroko dust would feels slightly oily to the touch.
