So i'll explain the reason for felling into the river.

 

Its easier to butt tie and fell into an open space with the lean, id either have to mess around with the throwline or spike a bank edge tree to top tie. Also if the tree failed (0.01% chance) then im going into the river with heavy gear on and attached to said tree.

 

Finally, its easier to winch between then drag a crown through other tree crowns.

 

If your winch is powerful enough you shouldn't need to climb or mess around with throw lines. The trees don't look that big, tied at head height should do the job with a decent winch.

 

It does look much more fun dropping them into the river though.

Its a bit weird Adam, we've got to clear the navigation risk trees (ones that have a higher likelihood of root failure) As the barge is working against the riverbank. In 3 weeks were back in to fell the remainder edge trees to a coppice.

 

Its mainly being done because were clear felling certain compartments to allow them to regenerate as reed so the edge trees are 30-35ft high, skinny with a bushy crown so the risk of windthrow is really high.

I've found it quicker to drop and drag though. Might do the last phase which is remove all the ones we have left that way to see if it is quicker, easier, less faffing around

Just a skidder cone from proclimber, use it all the time even when using the truck winch.
