How secure is this site/forum/server?

its as said, the only thing i see that is dangerous here is people showing off guns, tools, toys, thats down to individuals though, you can only blame yourself for what you publicise!

As I said before...any website can be hacked pretty easily...its just a matter of if you are unlucky enough to be targetted.

 

I expect sites like facebook are probably hacked constantly...difference being they probably have a full time team of coders who do nothing but fight the hackers off.

It would be nice to be able to get on the British Farming Forum but they dont want real farmers having refused my application several times.

Steve is correct about people hacking into a web-site. A few years back I found one of my sites hacked into and the person or persons responsible actually contacted me and attempted to extort $$$$$ out of me. I contacted the hosting company responsible for maintaining and securing my site and their response was, "We suggest you change your pass word". I asked should I be concerned about anything else, and their reply was unless your site is being bombarded by porn or the like I would not worry about it?. Probably some kid wanting to make some money off of you!. The lack of concern for a company who I trusted and also received a large amount of $$$$ over the years of my doing business with them really destroyed any faith I had with them. Yes I did sack this same hosting company within 24 hours and secured another company which allowed myself and my IT guy to monitor and change as needed, all aspects of my website. A more hands on approach was required and I am glad the lesson learned was not to costly.

Steve to his credit has invested a tremendous amount of emotional/financial capital to create and maintain ArbTalk along with the Mods. No easy task, but one I understand and appreciate having done that and been there.

For my passwords I use a sentence and then use the first letter or use phonetic spelling.

 

Eg:

For facebook

Facebook is the worst site out there isn't it?

 

To make:

Fbitwsotii?

 

It can be more complicated and you can use capital or symbols such as @ or #

 

And change your password at least every six months.

 

I also store all my passwords(because every site has a different password) in a google docs spreadsheet named to do list (not the actual name but I'm not going to tell you!) Because you don't want to but pssst all my passwords are here. Plus I put it in a series of folders and not on my homepage!

 

And if you do use one password for your email and bank then don't use it on un trusted sites, or use simple random password, like pencil.
