020 av restoration

I recently acquired the above mentioned saw from ebay as I am slowly getting back into tree work but don't do enough to justify a newer saw.

I have got to say I love it - the extra weight doesn't seem to be too bad and after fixing a few bits it runs as good as any saw I have ever used. There is only one thing wrong with it - the chain brake is crap - which is a fairly big problem when hanging from a rope.

Does anyone have any experience of servicing the chain brake mechanism on these? Were they just always crap? I have not taken it apart as the parts are riveted to the clutch cover and I have never tackled rivets. Lastly - I have searched everywhere for a replacement brake band (including ebay) but so far no joy.

Any help would be much appreciated as It would be tragic not to use it just because I cant fix one part on an otherwise fantastic saw.:001_smile:

Is the brake band actually shot? If so, that would explain why the mechanism isn't working properly, if not it might be worth posting up some photos of the thing (nicely cleaned up) for comment.

Have you downloaded a parts list, extracted the part number and tried typing it into google on its own? This sometimes turns up obscure parts sources, in foreign countries where the part name doesn't match. Also worth searching ebay.com directly and enquiring whether the person will ship (sometimes will if asked and the part is small) and, once you have the parts list, try ebay.de and search on the german name for the part.

Also worth looking at L&S Engineers if you haven't already, and typing in the part number. It may match a different, current or more recent, saw - a good clue is if they share a common clutch drum.

Thank you chaps - I have spent quite a long time trying to google the part number - I have even tried it on German search engines but had no Joy.

In answer to the question 'is the band shot' the answer is no. It engages when clean. I tried cleaning the drum and band with brake fluid and it solves the problem temporarily but once the saw has been cutting for a little while and oil/ debris etc come in to play the brake becomes less efficient until it does not work at all.

I suspect that it is just not quite tight enough but I am reluctant to take off the plate that exposes everything because of the rivets.

I also wonder if the band sits perfectly over the drum - does'nt look like it.

Where would I find Dick Leigh? Internet or phone?

Thanks again

C

Hi

Just to let you know I contacted Dick leigh and they were able to talk me through sorting the problem out so chain brake is now 100% for £0.

Thanks for putting me onto them - I am going to send my very sick 026 there way for an overhaul.

Cheers

I'm rather keen to learn as well I have two 020av`s one is in bits more for spares as it is an older model without chain brake :thumbup1: but the one with brake is incredibly difficult to release/engage I have taken it up a tree once but the brake really put me off climbing with it anymore
