Skidding with tracked chipper

Anyone use a tracked chipper for skidding on small thinning operations. Just wondered if it is a viable use for this bit of kit.

It works, done it a fair bit when necessary, but I don't know if I'd use it if it was solely for that purpose, lots of wear and tear if its not there chipping anyway if you know what I mean

It's not something I'd do unless I had to as it's very slow in comparison to using even a small tractor and as said above is going to put stresses through the machine they aren't really built for.

 

Speed wise, IMO it's to slow to be viable for any sort of production work.

Maybe 1 or 2 bits n obs on a small clearance but I wouldn't use it as a skidder, well maybe ifit was a hired 1:biggrin:

we can skid 5-6 peices at a time with a tracked timberwolf,, its about all there good for as they certainly aint built for chipping.

we have to skid down boundarts behind houses in 1 mile stretches some times as theres no access for anything else. the ony wear and tear is running the engine for a little while.

But surely it's not production work is it? Wouldn't it be more cost effective to just cut to waste?

Budget for a new set of tracks-I reckon stretched tracks were due to pulling too much

not production i suppose but we do sell the wood on in 7.6 foot lengths and the amount we take out doing boundaryt clearance is too much to cut and stack for habitat.

we've never stretched tracks and they are well used.. some chippers can be fitted with a winch,, there is another idea for you.
