This old knarly tree didnt look much when me and gareth took a look at it. Today gareth wanted to get it done because of the snow and rubbish traffic took me from 7.30 till just after 10am tk cover the 45miles to the job site still managed to strip out the tree ready to fell tomorow. Everything had to be lowered quite a unstable tree didnt feel 100 percent about its strength in that union but no matter we got it done. I would have loved to see it left as a pollard but all coming out.

That's a shame it had to go James but I always have to look at it and as I'm sure you do as well, that if the client has all the paper work and won't be swayed if you don't do it some one else will! Although personally I would rather be looking at an old pollard than a semi mature maybe even mature example they just have so much character those gnarled up old trees.

What's the context of the site James, Is it on a farm or urban?

Unstable in the pollard poles & unions or the base as well?

.

Hi david it was a old farm hedgerow tree (plenty of metal in bottom few feet) no idea how old it was, the tree felt unstable moving about on its own with no wind and me not moving. All the stem was solid wood bar the actual bit in sitting in was totally hollowed out and the whole tree was full of brown rot

Yer matty wasnt my job, went to see it with gareth he wanted a yes or no as to if id climb it, the clients have reduced it many a time in there 27yrs they thought it was its time to come out, no tpo they want it out i got a good load of firewood jobs a goodun

Thanks James :thumbup1:

Just interested in historically worked trees that's all.

Like to get a feel for how lapsed these trees have become and what relevance owners give them historically and landscape wise.

Any thought given to bat habitat loss mitigation in terms of putting up a box or two?

No worries david, i no there looking to plant a couple of new trees more suited to there sized garden. Nothing was mentioned with bat boxes though. Im sure theres plenty of other similar trees nearby as its surrounded by big old fields.
