Another classic Reg, first post i looked at after getting back from my hols.

No criticism intended as I know you're a bit of a pioneer when it comes to experimenting with new rigging ideas so here's an old one...

Just out of interest any reason for not using a second pulley to take the lowering line away a bit further? I've been pushing my luck with second pulleys on thinner and thinner branches waiting for one to go, still not bust one (using common sense), so long as the angle of the rope is 45 degrees plus it seems almost anything goes, particularly when you can take all the slack / stretch out of the system with the hobbs.

 

Tom, considering the extent of decay it made more sense to sacrifice the extra rigging extension you refer to in favour of maintaining the main stem under as much direct compression as what was achievable. I could have further made things easier by also pushing the rigging point a little higher up, but again it was safer to keep it low and just make the best of it.

 

As you know, when dealing with hazardous trees it really comes down to an individuals experience and intuition in deciding upon a strategy….that of which to achieve ones objectives in the most logical order. Obviously the safety of the workers is paramount and should always come before efficiency and convenience….but I think its pretty clear in the video that things went easy enough anyhow, only I just had to do a little more cutting than what I would have preferred. Thanks.

Reg I dont know how many times I've said this, but you really are in another league. I have 8 companies contract for me and only a handful of blokes from all these could do what you do.
