Can anyone help....?

 

We have recently bought and moved into a property with a large horse chestnut tree

 

To begin with as you can see from a number of the pictures attached, we may be suffering from Leaf mining moth. Does this look to be the case and can it please be confirmed that this does not affect its health in the long term?

 

On a more serious note, having pulled away some ivy that had been growing around it's trunk, we discovered this weekend that there is a huge hole running deep into the trunk. There was old fungi growing inside. Once pulled out we discovered new fungi growing on the roof of the hole. Please see all attached photos along with one showing its size compared to my arm.

 

Can anyone please advise what has caused this and what course of action needs to be taken. We are distraught at the idea of losing such an old and beautiful tree. This tree also has a protection order on it.

Sadie, try re-starting your posting in the Homeowners Tree Advice Forum. Ore pople are likely to see it there than in the fungi section.

 

But in short you have a tree that is clearly defective, and could be an unacceptable risk to you and to the public on the adjacent road. Now that you are aware of the defect, the law obliges you to follow it up. I strongly recommend that you pay for professional advice from someone (not a tree surgeon but a tree consultant) who can inspect the tree in all its context and advise you in writing on prognosis, risk and the courses of action open to you for a tree preservation order situation. And of course what can be done if anythign to save the tree.

Not a fungi/host you've noted either? There were a couple in this area, odd as there loads of oak and willow nearby which had none. Mostly ganos, and lots of merip on the beeches...

Without looking through all the files I think I've only really noted Ganoderma, Daedaleopsis confragosa & Inonotus radiatus associating with Alder.
