Neither, these are more than likely Armillaria, possibly mellea.

 

I suspect if you had a good root around you'd probably find rhizomorphs in the decayed wood volume.

Well, it's on a Nothifagus. I've been asked by one of my NZ friends for close up shots so I'll pop back maybe Monday and get some more photos. Nice to see the epiphytes colonising the fungi.

David hello tree is still standing and will make busy day when it falls! it is leaning over a well stocked lake, if I get a chance I try to supply pictures, no leaf on it this year. the Alder is one of the largest single stemmed I have seen and the ash possible twice the size of this, cheers for now
