Indeed! and it should stay like that...Main sucker is at the base of the root plate but I'll keep an eye out for others when its in leaf..

I'll let Dan have the glory with the most majestic beech I've come across, truly amazing but here's a few others from today.

This chestnut was supposedly the widest spread in Europe, we measured it at 30.6m but not entirely sure for the widest spread in Europe?.

 

The height was 20.96m again not the tallest by no means, it's had quite some extensive reduction work done in the past so possibly a little shy of its original height and spread, not sure on the girth but I'm sure Dan has that info.

 

There was also a plaque next to the tree but maybe some issues with that, I'll let Dan talk you through that one as I think he has the photo to it.

This plaque was placed by a smaller chestnut nearby;

 

"This chestnut tree was planted by Claude Ancliffe in 1978....This tree was grown from a chestnut taken from the chestnut tree planted by Katherene (sic) Howard, wife of Henry VIII on 13th October 1541"

 

Implying that the older tree is the original 1541 tree, making it 472 years old. Doing a quick rough measurement and calculation, the older tree is approximately four times the girth of the younger, so ignoring bad years etc, it should be roughly four times the age (I may be wrong). Based on the 1978 planting date, the older tree is approximately 132 years old. Difficult to believe it's the original. Perhaps a replacement for a replacement of the original?

Crowning glory of the day. The beech at Canwick measured in at 23.7m high, with a spread of 37.5m and a girth of 5'2". Not the tallest but one hell of a spread, it could have possibly been a bit wider had it not shed a few limbs.
