My splitter i made has about the same size ram as yours, and was as slow running as yours when connected to my MF590. so i connected it to a spare out let on a old volvo 6 cylinder lorry i have with a crane on it for around the yard, it doubled the speed and made it alot more powerfull when just over tickover. i would say if it was going faster i would let go of the wood once it grips, just to make sure your hand is well out of the way.

I was reading the MF 290's manual and the pump out put is only 8 gallons per min at 2000 revs well i don't rum the tractor at that speed because the it is hard on the tractor and hard on the wallet. I think that a hi output pump like a 16 gallon min + pump would speed up the ram and still allow the the tractor on tickover. I think i will attach the splitter to a tractor with a higher oil output to see if it does speed up the ram. If it dose then i will get a PTO pump.

I will have a go at clamping the wood tomorrow in the splitter when i am cutting it up. It's a sweet idea Thanks :001_smile:

In my experience with tractors older masseys and ford were useless at driving splitters due to the oil flow, internationals and especially leylands have a far superior oil flow

This is my attempt so far as to building my splitter, need to make the 3 point linkage on the back and finish the hydraulics but so far so good. A small amount of animal cruelty for amusement also!!!
