My dad built one to plant seedlings and whips at his research project in Guyana south america. it works well in the soils over there and now saves him a lot of time. It was loosely based on a potatoe ridger and we welded on a ripper and closing mechanism. it pressed them in firmly and had a very high success rate. I have also seen a local plant supplier, John Holiday, from Ludlow with a mechanical planter, that also worked very well

This is the one we use, exceptionally well made and does a fantastic job. The controls are all electro-hydraulic and on foot pedals so the person on the planter makes the adjustments to depth etc on the go. This was a great ebay purchase
