Stumbled across this when thinning nr Grantown on Spey in November,

It was very nearly decked, but I thought it looked quite cool and decided to leave it - if nothing else it will aid the standing deadwood policy that's in place in the wood.

 

Only problem is that it's not far off a public path but the powers that be can decide what they want done with it.

I noticed the tree is shot to pieces, I thought the wind will have taken it over like that, but all the heartwood is missing - she'd been dead a very long time.

What a great tree! love seeing stuff like that. Are you based in Speyside? I remember many a week as a young boy traveling up to Grantown for a bit of fly fishing. In fact I caught my first salmon with fly on the river Spey. Great memories

I cant imagine thats a particularly high risk tree, theres not far for it to fall for one thing, and for another anyone looking at that is going to steer well clear as its clearly knackered. Except for arbs though, we all get up close for a better look!
