Need some help, I'm thinking of buying a hand winch probably Tirfor.

Anybody had experience with them/which is best model etc.

get a proper Tirfor, lots of cheap chinese copies about that just don't do the job...

on my recent cs35 the instructor was telling us about a small petrol winch he had bought. think of capstan type. strap to tree and tie to whatever to be pulled and off you go.

 

easy carry into gardens etc, use off towbar and so on. wasnt too expensive either and a lot less effort.

 

wish i could remember name now, but all i know was below £1000

What's it for? 3 common sizes of around 1t, 3t, and 5t, big winches are heavy. Tirfor are good but expensive. Chinese copies can be well worth the money - they are cheap - if you only use occassionally, they won't last the same as a Tirfor, but you can buy two or three for the same money.

I need something for pulling out hung up trees and moving trunk sections, also got a large sweet chestnut to fell next year and want to make sure it goes in the right direction.

Looked at Tirfor T16 & T32 but not sure if the 32 will be a bit overkill.

I use an "Ace" winch. Similar to Tirfor but was about 300 new, all in with 20m wire rope and a couple of strops and shackles.

Same as the "Jet" ones. Yup it's a Chinese copy but it has worked brilliantly for me. Pulled an ash and an elm out of a loch recently with no hassles. Always first option when dealing with hung up trees that won't roll out.

1.6t strength. Only downside is that its a heavy carry. And you sweat like a pig when it's a big pull.

A powered one would be good, there are mods you can do to some chainsaws to use them to power a winch. That might be worth a look if you only want to sweat carrying it in ! :-)

I have one of these:

 

Tirfor T516 winch with 20m cable | F R Jones and Son

 

Great bit of kit. I use it almost everyday in the woods. It is heavy! T32 one will be overkill i reckon. Remember the rated strength is lift not pull. I use a snatch block if I want to get a bigger pull on it. Doubled up its 3.2 ton so could lift my land rover 110 off the floor!

I have the 5 ton ,that's pulled some stubborn stuff about, and the smaller 3ton tirfor a lot lighter for general pulls and hauling across rough ground. If I had to have one, it would be the biggest most capable I could handle. I'm lucky to have an assortment of three tirfor which means I can pull in and lift at the same time if I want.
